Root canal treatment is a procedure used to treat infection or inflammation affecting the soft tissue inside a tooth, commonly known as the dental pulp.
When the pulp becomes infected or severely inflamed due to deep decay, cracks, trauma, or repeated dental procedures, it can cause toothache, sensitivity, swelling, or discomfort. Without appropriate treatment, the infection may spread to the surrounding tissues.
During root canal treatment, the infected or damaged pulp is carefully removed. The inside of the tooth is then cleaned, disinfected, shaped, and sealed to help prevent further infection.
The treated tooth may subsequently require a dental crown or other restoration to restore its strength and function, depending on the amount of remaining tooth structure.
The primary objective is to save the natural tooth whenever it is structurally possible and clinically appropriate.
